![]() Scientist A study of the effectiveness of indoor plants for passive ozone removal revealed that foliage plants “at best contribute about 0.9-9% to the indoor ozone removal effect.” Tests conducted in the laboratory to simulate typical US home impacts have shown that foliage plants have little impact on the environment. However, recent research has poured cold water into this idea. In a well-cited 1989 report, NASA Scientist Bill Walberton Houseplants argued that they could provide “a promising economic solution to indoor air pollution.” Wolverton studied the plant’s ability to remove VOCs from the environment and its potential for use in deep space missions.
